1000 Beautiful Things

Today was full of promise and yet empty of words. But as usual, it just takes a gentle nudge from Jann to inspire words on a day where my own seem to have left me. And so I imagined what our lives would be like living in Venice, Italy.

*

The sunlight bleeds through billowy white sheers, threatening to wake the ancient mud-soaked walls. Rose and saphron fill the morning as I'm greeted by my other half and the gentle furbeasts who share this loft that overlooks the mermaid green. The smell of the briny sea mixes with warm butter and bread, recharging my brain for another day.

*

I step out into yesterday amidst saturated blues and greens, surrounded by polished antiquity and wood so parched it has become the color it was painted. I breathe in the color, smiling at anyone and everyone (I don't care if they do think I'm crazy). My feet grace each cobbled step with the assurance of belonging. I reach the shop with the earliest fingers of daylight, and the sound of my key unlatching the door awakens the expectation of another sparkling day.

Burried in colored glass of every shape, hue and size, surrounded by the radiant faces and ribbons of delight, my fingers begin their work, weaving color to texture to shape and size. I send these colorful orphans off to their adopted lives, knowing I'm giving away free pieces of mermaid green with every purchase. My words swap countries throughout the day, and I do not notice. My mind tends to those things that need tending, and nothing more.

Tuscan yellow blends to watermelon red, and the windy afternoon ushers in my sweetie with the food of the gods. We take a stroll to where the raspberries live and try to decide which painting we love more. Cat eyes say hello and let me know all is fine and well in our world. The weathered faces become my aspiration and the comfort of familiarity and kindness. Some look and see only time's deep caress, but I see the ravages of unbridled joy. My gratitude for this lively and quietly floating paradise makes my heart ache.

The azure falls to indigo, and another day falls to contentment.

It feels so real to me.

Here I go again
Singin' by your window
Pickin' up the pieces of what's left to find
The world was meant for you and me
To figure out our destiny
A thousand beautiful things
To live, To die, To breathe, To sleep,
To try to make your life complete
So ...Light me up like the sun
To cool down with your rain
I never want to close my eyes again
That is everything I have to say
that's all I have to say
(1000 Beautiful Things, Annie Lennox)
